What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is the file name Apple uses for HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) photos. iPhones and iPads have saved photos as HEIC by default since iOS 11, because it stores the same picture in roughly half the size of a JPG. The trade-off is compatibility: many Windows programs, Android apps, upload forms and older tools cannot open HEIC files, which is why converting to JPG is so often needed.
Why convert HEIC to JPG?
JPG opens everywhere — Windows Photo Viewer, Android galleries, web upload forms, e-mail clients, photo printers and virtually every editor made in the last twenty years. If a website rejects your iPhone photo, a colleague cannot open it, or an older program shows an error, converting the HEIC to JPG solves it without changing how the photo looks.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The HEIC file is decoded and re-encoded entirely in your browser. In Safari the browser's own decoder is used; in Chrome, Edge and Firefox a small decoder module is downloaded once (about 1 MB) and then everything runs locally. Your photo never leaves your device, which makes this safe for personal pictures.
Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?
JPG is a lossy format, so the re-encode applies compression. At the default 90% quality the difference is not visible in normal viewing, and you can raise the slider to 100% for the least compression or lower it for a smaller file. The pixel dimensions of the photo are never changed.
Is the location (EXIF) data kept in the JPG?
No — the converted JPG contains no EXIF metadata. Because the photo is redrawn through a canvas, camera details, timestamps and GPS location are all stripped. That is usually a privacy plus when sharing photos, but keep your original HEIC if you need the metadata.
