Minutes carry straight across — 1630 is 4:30 PM, 0745 is 7:45 AM, and 2359 is 11:59 PM. Midnight written as the end of a day (a deadline, a shift close) may appear as 2400; the next minute is 0001, which is 12:01 AM.

How to Read Military Time

Four digits, one rule — you'll read it at a glance in a minute.

1

Split the four digits into hours and minutes

Military time is always HHMM with no colon: in 1630, the first pair (16) is the hour and the second pair (30) is the minutes. Morning hours keep a leading zero, so 6:30 AM is written 0630 and spoken "zero six thirty".

2

Hours 0–11 are AM, exactly as written

0100 through 1159 map straight onto 1:00 AM through 11:59 AM — nothing to calculate. The special case is the midnight hour: 0000–0059 is the 12 AM hour, so 0010 reads as 12:10 AM.

3

From 1300 on, subtract 1200 for the PM time

1300 is 1:00 PM, 1600 is 4:00 PM, 2000 is 8:00 PM, 2359 is 11:59 PM — subtract 12 from the hour and add PM. 1200 itself is simply noon. Coordinating that 1600 meeting across time zones? The World Clock compares cities side by side, and the Hours Calculator adds up shift lengths between any two clock times.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you convert military time to regular time?
Read the four digits as hours and minutes (HHMM), then apply one rule: from 1300 to 2359, subtract 1200 and make it PM — so 1600 is 4:00 PM and 2130 is 9:30 PM. Times from 0100 to 1159 are simply AM (0730 is 7:30 AM), 1200 to 1259 stays 12:xx PM, and 0000 to 0059 is the 12 AM midnight hour, so 0010 is 12:10 AM. The minutes never change — only the hour does — which is why 2359 is 11:59 PM and one minute later the clock rolls over to 0000.
What is 8pm in military time?
8:00 PM is 2000 in military time, spoken "twenty hundred hours". To convert any PM time, add 12 to the hour: 1:00 PM is 1300, 5:00 PM is 1700, 8:00 PM is 2000, 10:00 PM is 2200 and 11:00 PM is 2300. The only PM exception is noon itself — 12:00 PM is already 1200, so nothing is added.
What time is it right now in military time?
The converter at the top of this page shows the current time in military time, live, based on your device's clock and time zone, alongside the same moment in regular 12-hour time. To work it out yourself: if your clock shows an AM time, pad the hour to two digits and drop the colon (9:41 AM becomes 0941); if it shows a PM time after noon, add 12 to the hour first (9:41 PM becomes 2141).
How do you say military time out loud?
On the hour, say the hour number followed by "hundred hours": 0900 is "zero nine hundred hours" and 1600 is "sixteen hundred hours". With minutes, read the digits in pairs and drop "hundred": 0630 is "zero six thirty" and 2145 is "twenty-one forty-five". Leading zeros are always spoken as "zero", never "oh", in strict military usage — that is the main difference from casual 24-hour clock speech.
Is midnight 0000 or 2400 in military time?
Both are used, for different purposes. 0000 marks midnight as the start of a new day and is the standard form — one minute after 2359, the clock reads 0000. 2400 is used to mark midnight as the end of the current day, typically for deadlines and schedules ending at midnight ("complete by 2400 Friday"). This converter accepts 2400 and treats it as 12:00 AM.
Is military time the same as the 24-hour clock?
They map hours identically, but the writing differs. The civilian 24-hour clock — standard across most of the world and in ISO 8601 — writes 16:30 with a colon. Military time writes the same moment as 1630: always four digits, no colon, spoken with "hours". The military also appends time-zone letters, most famously Z for UTC ("Zulu time") used in aviation and forecasting — the World Clock shows your offset from UTC. Army time is just an informal name for the same system.
