Frequently Asked Questions

What do EST, CST, MST and PST mean?
EST, CST, MST and PST are the four main United States time zones: EST is Eastern (New York, UTC−5), CST is Central (Chicago, UTC−6), MST is Mountain (Denver, UTC−7) and PST is Pacific (Los Angeles, UTC−8). In summer each shifts an hour forward to its daylight version — EDT, CDT, MDT and PDT — which is why “ET” or “PT” without the middle letter just means whichever one that zone is on right now. Alaska and Hawaii run on their own zones, AKST and HST, which sit further west again and normally fall outside the four main US time zones.
What is my time zone right now?
Your device reports it automatically — the badge near the top of this page shows your current time zone and its UTC offset. Because it is read from your device clock it already reflects daylight saving, so it is the offset in force today rather than the year-round standard one. If the detected zone or offset looks wrong, check the date-and-time settings on your phone or computer — this page can only report what your operating system tells the browser.
Is there a time zone calculator?
Yes — the time zone converter on this page covers every popular fixed offset, with a dedicated page and a full 24-hour table for GMT, BST, EST, CST, MST, PST and IST pairs. It works from fixed offset arithmetic rather than a live time zone database, so it is exact for those named offsets but does not shift for daylight saving on its own. For city-to-city conversions that track daylight saving automatically, use the World Clock, or the Time Difference tool to see the current gap between two specific cities. To find a single hour that works for a group spread across several time zones, use the Meeting Planner.
How do I convert time zones in Excel?
Excel stores a time as a fraction of a day, so you shift zones by adding or subtracting the offset in hours divided by 24. To turn a UTC time in cell A1 into New York time (UTC−5 in winter) use =A1-5/24; into Central European time (UTC+1) use =A1+1/24. The catch is daylight saving — the offset changes twice a year, so a fixed formula is only correct for part of the year. For an always-correct result, use the converter on this page or the World Clock instead.
