Frequently Asked Questions

What is 100 in Roman numerals?
100 in Roman numerals is C, the single letter that stands for one hundred. It is the last entry in the 1 to 100 chart above, where 99 is XCIX and 100 rolls over to a single symbol. The letter C comes from the Latin centum, which is also the root of the word century.
What are the Roman numerals from 1 to 10?
The Roman numerals from 1 to 10 are I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX and X. Only two of them use subtractive notation: IV is 5 minus 1 and IX is 10 minus 1, which is why 4 is not IIII and 9 is not VIIII. The other eight simply add I to the numeral before them, up to three I symbols in a row.
Why is 4 written IV and not IIII?
4 is written IV because Roman numerals use subtractive notation for the values that would otherwise need four repeats: inside the 1 to 100 chart those are IV (4), IX (9), XL (40) and XC (90). Placing a smaller letter before a larger one means subtract it, so IV reads as 5 minus 1. The same rule is why 40 is XL rather than XXXX and 90 is XC rather than LXXXX.
Which letters repeat in the 1 to 100 chart?
In the 1 to 100 chart only I, X and C appear more than once inside a numeral, and never more than three times: III is 3, XXX is 30, and the chart ends at C for 100. V and L are never repeated, because two of either would simply equal the next letter up — VV would be X and LL would be C. That is why 8 is VIII and 80 is LXXX rather than a doubled V or L.
