How do I subtract mixed numbers?

Convert both to improper fractions over a common denominator, subtract the numerators, then rewrite the result as a mixed number. For 3 1/4 − 1 2/3, that is 13/4 − 5/3 = 39/12 − 20/12 = 19/12 = 1 7/12. Subtracting this way avoids the tricky borrowing you would otherwise do with the whole numbers and fractions separately. How do I convert an improper fraction to a mixed number?

Divide the numerator by the denominator. The whole-number part is the quotient, the remainder becomes the new numerator, and the denominator stays the same. For 11/4, 11 ÷ 4 is 2 remainder 3, so 11/4 = 2 3/4.
