What are the mean, median and mode?
They are the three common measures of a typical value. The mean is the arithmetic average: add the numbers and divide by how many there are. The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted. The mode is the value that appears most often. Together they describe the centre of a data set in different ways.
How do you find the median of an even number of values?
Sort the numbers and take the two middle values, then average them. For example, in 1, 2, 3, 4 the two middle numbers are 2 and 3, so the median is 2.5. With an odd count, the median is simply the single middle value after sorting.
Can a data set have more than one mode, or no mode?
Yes. If two or more values tie for the highest frequency, the data set is multimodal and has several modes. If every value appears exactly once, there is no mode at all. This calculator lists every mode when there is a tie and says so when there is none.
What is the range?
The range is the difference between the largest and smallest values in the data set. It is the simplest measure of spread: a larger range means the values are more spread out. For a fuller picture of spread, the standard deviation and variance take every value into account.
