What is long division?
Long division is the step-by-step method for dividing one whole number (the dividend) by another (the divisor) by hand, one digit at a time. You bring down each digit of the dividend, work out how many times the divisor fits into the running partial dividend, subtract that multiple, and carry the remainder into the next digit. Repeating this until every digit has been brought down gives the quotient, with whatever is left over at the end as the remainder.
How do you find the remainder in long division?
The remainder is whatever is left over after the last digit of the dividend has been brought down and the largest possible multiple of the divisor has been subtracted from it. For example, 725 divided by 3 gives a quotient of 241 with a remainder of 2, because 3 × 241 = 723 and 725 - 723 = 2. A remainder of 0 means the dividend divides evenly.
What happens when the dividend is smaller than the divisor?
If the dividend is smaller than the divisor, the quotient is 0 and the remainder is just the dividend itself, since the divisor cannot fit into it even once. For example, 3 divided by 7 gives a quotient of 0 and a remainder of 3.
Can you divide by zero?
No. Division by zero is undefined in ordinary arithmetic, because no number multiplied by zero can produce a nonzero dividend, and any number multiplied by zero equally satisfies a dividend of zero. This calculator throws an error rather than returning a result if the divisor is 0.
