How do you convert a decimal to a fraction?
Write the decimal over a power of ten — one zero for each decimal place — then reduce by the greatest common divisor. For 0.75 that is 75/100, and dividing both parts by 25 gives 3/4. For 0.125 it is 125/1000, which reduces to 1/8. A number greater than 1, such as 2.4, becomes 24/10 = 12/5, or the mixed number 2 2/5.
Can it convert repeating decimals?
Yes. Put the repeating digits in brackets and it converts them exactly: 0.(3) becomes 1/3, 0.(142857) becomes 1/7, and 0.58(3) becomes 7/12. It uses the standard algebra — if x = 0.333… then 10x − x = 3, so 9x = 3 and x = 1/3 — and stays exact for any repeat length. If you instead type a rounded decimal without brackets, such as 0.3333, you get the fraction for that exact rounded value (3333/10000), which is only an approximation of 1/3.
What is a mixed number?
A mixed number combines a whole number with a proper fraction, such as 2 1/2. The calculator shows one whenever the improper fraction is larger than one, so 7/4 is displayed as 1 3/4. Convert back by multiplying the whole part by the denominator and adding the numerator, giving 1 3/4 = (1 × 4 + 3)/4 = 7/4. Values below 1 have no whole part, so no mixed form is shown.
