How do I add fractions with different denominators?
Give both fractions the same denominator, then add the numerators. The quick way is to multiply each fraction by the other's denominator: for 1/2 + 1/3, rewrite them as 3/6 and 2/6, which share a denominator of 6, then add to get 5/6. If the result can be reduced, divide the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor. How do I simplify a fraction?
To simplify a fraction, divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor, the largest number that goes into both exactly. For 8/12 the greatest common divisor is 4, so dividing both by 4 gives 2/3, which cannot be reduced further. A fraction is in lowest terms when the only number dividing both parts is 1. How do I multiply and divide fractions?
To multiply, multiply the numerators together and the denominators together: 1/2 × 3/4 = 3/8. How do I convert a mixed number to an improper fraction?
