What are significant figures?
Significant figures are the digits in a number that carry information about its precision. They include every non-zero digit, any zeros between non-zero digits, and trailing zeros when a decimal point is present. So 1024 has four significant figures and 0.00250 has three, while 1200 is ambiguous unless it is written as 1.2 × 10³ or 1.200 × 10³. The count matters because a calculated result should not claim more precision than its least precise input.
Do leading zeros count as significant?
Leading zeros are never significant, because they only mark the position of the decimal point. In 0.0045 only the 4 and the 5 carry precision, so the number has two significant figures. Writing it as 4.5 × 10⁻³ makes that explicit, since scientific notation shows only the significant digits. Zeros between non-zero digits, such as the 0 in 4.05, do count.
Do trailing zeros count?
Trailing zeros count only when there is a decimal point. 1200 has two significant figures, but 1200. and 1200.0 have four and five respectively.
