What is the surface area of a cylinder?
A closed cylinder has surface area 2πr² + 2πrh, which is the two circular ends plus the curved side. With r = 3 and h = 5 that is 2π(9) + 2π(15) = 48π, about 150.80. An open tube or a tank with no lid drops one or both of the πr² end caps. Enter the radius and the height and the calculator applies the closed-cylinder formula and shows each part.
How do I find the surface area of a cone?
The surface area of a closed cone is πr² + πr·l, where l is the slant height, l = √(r² + h²). For r = 3 and h = 4 the slant height is 5, so the area is 9π + 15π = 24π, about 75.40. The πr² term is the circular base and πr·l is the curved lateral surface. Select Cone and enter the radius and the height; the slant height is worked out for you.
What units does surface area come out in?
Surface area comes out in the unit you entered the dimensions in, squared. Centimetres in gives square centimetres (cm²), and metres in gives square metres (m²). The calculator is unit-agnostic, so mixing units within one shape gives a meaningless answer and you should convert everything first. Remember that scaling every length by a factor k multiplies the surface area by k².
