How to create a receipt
Start by filling in your business — the name, address and contact details that appear at the top of the receipt — and optionally add your logo. Under Received from, enter who made the payment. Add a line for each product or service that was paid for, with a quantity and unit price; the amount for each row and the running subtotal are worked out for you. Set a tax rate if it applies, choose how the payment was made, and enter the amount paid — leave it blank to mark the receipt paid in full. The total, the amount paid and any balance due update instantly.
Download as PDF or print
When your receipt looks right, click Download PDF to save a clean, professional PDF you can email to your customer, or click Print to send it to a printer or save it from your browser's print dialog. Everything is generated in your browser, so your figures and your customer's details are never sent anywhere. Your current receipt is saved locally, so it's still here next time you open the page on the same device.
Receipt vs invoice — which do you need?
An invoice is a request for payment: you send it before the customer pays, and it shows what is owed and when. A receipt is proof of a payment that has already happened: it records what was paid, how it was paid and when, and shows any balance still outstanding. Bill first with the Invoice Generator, then, once you have been paid, hand over a receipt from here.
What to put on a receipt
A complete receipt usually includes a unique receipt number, the date the payment was made, your business name and contact details, the payer's name, an itemised list of what was paid for, the subtotal, any tax, the total, the payment method and the amount paid. Recording the amount paid lets the receipt show whether the balance is fully settled or partly outstanding — this generator marks a receipt PAID automatically when nothing is left to pay, and you can pick from 14 currencies.
Frequently asked questions
Is this receipt generator really free?
Yes — it's completely free with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many receipts you create. It runs entirely in your browser, so your business and customer details are never uploaded to a server.
What is the difference between a receipt and an invoice?
An invoice is a request for payment sent before the customer pays; a receipt is proof that a payment has already been made. If you need to ask for payment, use the Invoice Generator; once you've been paid, give a receipt.
Is a receipt from this generator legally valid?
A receipt is a record of a transaction, and a clear, itemised receipt with your business details, the payer, the date, the amount and the payment method is generally accepted as proof of payment. Requirements vary by country and situation, so check your local rules if you need a formal tax or VAT receipt.
Does this upload my data anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Your details, the payer's details, the amounts and any logo you add never leave your device — the logo is embedded straight into the PDF. Your current receipt is saved only in local storage, and downloaded PDFs go wherever your browser saves files.
