Is there a meteor shower tonight?
The tool checks today's date against the active periods of the major annual meteor showers and shows any that are running, highlighting the one closest to its peak. When you add your location it also works out how high that shower's radiant climbs over you tonight, the best dark-sky window to watch, and whether the Moon will interfere — and gives a simple verdict for the night. When no major shower is active it says so, and you can still see a few sporadic meteors an hour under a dark sky.
When is the best time to watch a meteor shower?
Usually after midnight and before dawn. Two things drive it: the shower's radiant needs to be well above the horizon (higher radiant means more meteors), and the sky needs to be fully dark, which means after astronomical twilight ends and, ideally, when the Moon is down. The tool combines these to pick the best time for your location on the night. Give your eyes 20–30 minutes to adapt to the dark and look at the whole sky, not just the radiant.
Do I need a telescope, and where do I look?
No telescope or binoculars — meteors flash across large areas of sky, so your naked eyes and a wide view are best. Find the darkest spot you can, away from streetlights, lie back and take in as much sky as possible. Meteors can appear anywhere but their trails point back to the radiant, the constellation the tool names for each shower. Warm clothes and a reclining chair help more than any equipment.
Why does the Moon matter so much?
Moonlight is the biggest spoiler of a meteor shower. A bright Moon in the sky washes out the fainter meteors, so even a strong shower can disappoint near a full Moon, while the same shower under a new Moon can be spectacular. The tool shows how illuminated the Moon is and whether it is above the horizon during the best viewing hours, so you know what to expect.
What do the meteors-per-hour and ZHR numbers mean?
ZHR — zenithal hourly rate — is the number of meteors an ideal observer would see per hour under a perfectly dark sky with the radiant straight overhead. It is a best case. In practice you will see fewer, because the radiant is rarely at the zenith, skies are rarely perfectly dark, and any Moon or light pollution cuts the count. Treat the figure as the shower's strength ranking rather than a promise.
