How do I find tide times for my location?
Search for a coastal city or tap "Use my location". The tool finds the nearest NOAA tide station and shows today's high and low tides, the next tide with a countdown, and a tide chart. Times are given in the station's local time and heights are relative to Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW), the standard US tidal datum.
Where does the tide data come from?
Tide predictions come from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), through its free CO-OPS Tides & Currents API. These are astronomical tide predictions computed from harmonic constituents for each station; actual water levels can differ with wind, pressure and storms.
Does it work outside the United States?
Not yet. NOAA's tide stations cover the United States and its territories, so the tool needs a location within about 200 km of a US station. If you search somewhere with no nearby station it will tell you rather than show distant data. For US coasts, Pacific islands, the Gulf and the Great Lakes it works well.
What do high tide and low tide mean, and what is MLLW?
High tide is when the water reaches its highest point and low tide its lowest, driven mainly by the Moon's gravity. Most US coasts have two highs and two lows a day. Heights are measured above MLLW (Mean Lower Low Water) — the average of the lower low tide each day over a 19-year period — which is why some heights can be slightly negative at very low tides. Is it free and do I need an API key?
Yes — the tide times tool is completely free, and no API key or sign-up is required. NOAA provides the data openly. There is no account, no paid tier and no advertising anywhere on the page.
