How to Test Your Microphone

A mic test is the fastest way to confirm you'll be heard before a call, recording or stream.

Start & allow

Press Start microphone and click Allow when your browser asks. Speak normally — the level meter and waveform should move with your voice.

Read the level

Aim for the meter to peak in the middle-to-upper range when you talk. If it barely moves, your mic gain is low; if it's pinned at 100%, it's too loud and may clip.

Hear yourself

Turn on Hear myself to play your mic back through your speakers. Use headphones so the speakers don't feed back into the mic. Also test your webcam.

Can I hear myself?
Yes — the microphone test can play your voice back, so turn on Hear myself to route the mic to your speakers. Playback is muted until you switch it on, so nothing comes back through the speakers by accident. Use headphones, otherwise the speakers feed back into the mic and cause an echo or a loud whistle. Turning it off again mutes the playback while the meter and waveform keep running.
Why is my microphone not working?
A microphone that shows no level is most often a blocked permission, so check the microphone icon in your browser's address bar and allow access. Make sure the right input device is selected in the device list, because laptops often default to a different mic from the one you are speaking into. Close other apps that may be holding the microphone, since many systems hand it to one app at a time. If the meter moves but stays tiny, raise the input gain in your operating system's sound settings.
