How is the tip amount calculated?
The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage divided by 100. For a $60 bill at 18%, the tip is 60 × 18 ÷ 100, which is $10.80, and the total becomes $70.80. You can tap a quick button for 10, 15, 18 or 20 percent, or type any custom percentage. The calculator updates the tip, total and per-person amounts the moment you change the bill, the percentage or the number of people, so you can settle up at the table in seconds.
How does splitting the bill work?
Enter the number of people and the calculator divides the total — bill plus tip — evenly among them, and also shows the tip share per person. So a $70.80 total split three ways is $23.60 each. The number of people must be at least one; if you clear it or set it to zero the per-person figure simply shows the full total, because a bill cannot be divided among nobody. For uneven splits where people ordered very differently, divide each subtotal separately.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
That is up to you and local custom. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, while others tip on the total shown on the check including tax — the difference is usually small. This calculator applies the percentage to whatever bill figure you enter, so if you want to tip on the pre-tax amount, type that number in the bill field; if you prefer the post-tax total, enter that instead. The math is the same either way, you just choose the base.
Is the tip calculator free and private?
Yes. It is completely free with no account or sign-up, and the entire calculation runs in your browser. The amounts you enter are never sent anywhere or stored, so nothing is logged and it works offline once the page has loaded — useful when you are at a restaurant with a weak signal. Rounding is to the nearest cent for each figure, so the per-person shares may differ by a cent from the total; round up if you want the tip to land on a clean number.
