Discount Calculator

A discount is a percentage taken off a list price: the sale price is the original price times one minus the percent off, and the money saved is the difference between the two. Enter an original price and a percent off to see the sale price and how much you save. Stack a second discount, add sales tax, or reverse-calculate the discount from two prices.

Effective % off
Final incl. tax

Two discounts apply one after the other (sequentially), not by adding the percentages. Sales tax is charged on the discounted price.

Reverse: find the percent off

Know the original and final price but not the discount? Enter both to get the percent off.

How to Calculate a Discount

Turn a percent off into a sale price — and back again.

1

Enter the price and percent off

Type the original price and the discount percentage. The sale price and the amount you save update instantly as you type.

2

Stack a second discount or add tax

Add an optional second discount to model a coupon on top of a sale — the two apply sequentially and the tool shows the combined effective rate. Add your local sales-tax rate to see the final checkout total.

3

Or work backwards

Only have the ticket price and the marked-down price? Use the reverse section to get the exact percent off. To split a restaurant bill or add a gratuity instead, use the Tips Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a percentage discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount rate as a decimal (rate ÷ 100) to get the amount saved, then subtract it from the price. For example, $80 at 25% off is $80 × 0.25 = $20 saved, for a $60 sale price. The one-step shortcut is to multiply by (100 − rate) ÷ 100 instead, so the same $80 at 25% off is $80 × 0.75 = $60. Stacked discounts multiply rather than add: 20% off followed by a further 10% off is 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72, a 28% total reduction rather than 30%.
How do I work out the original price from a sale price?
If you know the original and the final price, the percent off is (original − final) ÷ original × 100. For example, an item marked down from $50 to $40 is (50 − 40) ÷ 50 = 20% off. Use the reverse section of this calculator to do it instantly.
Can I stack two discounts?
Yes — the discount calculator takes a second discount. Stacked discounts apply one after the other, not by adding the percentages. A 20% then 10% discount on $100 gives $100 × 0.80 = $80, then × 0.90 = $72 — a combined effective 28% off, not 30%.
How is sales tax applied to a discount?
Sales tax is charged on the discounted price, not the original. Take the sale price, then add tax: $90 after a discount at 8% tax is $90 × 1.08 = $97.20. Enter your local rate in the sales-tax field to see the final total.
Is my data private?
Yes — the LK Forge Discount Calculator keeps your data private: every calculation runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server, saved, or shared. The page loads its script once and then does the arithmetic locally, so the prices and percentages you enter never leave the device. Nothing is written to storage either, so closing or reloading the tab clears them.
