How to Play Hangman

  • The word: a hidden word appears as a row of blanks, one blank for each letter. The category above it tells you what kind of word to expect.
  • Guess letters: tap the on-screen keyboard or type on your keyboard. A correct letter is revealed in every position it appears and turns green.
  • Wrong guesses: each miss turns the letter red and draws one part of the figure — head, body, two arms, two legs.
  • Six and out: six wrong guesses complete the drawing and you lose the round; the answer is then revealed.
  • Win: reveal every letter of the word before that happens to win and extend your streak.
  • Start smart: open with common letters — the vowels E, A, O, I, U, then frequent consonants like T, N, R, S, L, D — before risking rare letters.

Stuck? The Hint button reveals one hidden letter for you, twice per game. Change the Category at any time, and hit New Word for a fresh round whenever you like.

Tips for Winning

Spend your first two or three guesses on vowels. Almost every English word contains at least one of E, A, O, I or U, so vowels quickly reveal the skeleton of the word and cost you little if you space them out.

Once you can see the pattern, reach for high-frequency consonants — T, N, R, S, L and D — and look for common endings like -ING, -TION or -ER and doubled letters. Save rare letters such as Q, Z, X and J until the shape of the word points to them.

Use the category as a genuine clue: a Science word is more likely to hide letters like C, O and N, while a Countries word often ends in -A or -LAND. Save your hints for a moment when one revealed letter would unlock the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play Hangman?

A secret word is shown as a row of blanks, one blank per letter. You guess one letter at a time. If the letter is in the word it is revealed in every position it appears; if it is not, one part of the hangman drawing is added. Keep guessing until you reveal the whole word to win, or the drawing is finished — six wrong guesses — and you lose. Try to spell out the word before the figure is complete.

How many wrong guesses are allowed?

Six. Each wrong letter adds one part to the drawing in order: the head, the body, the two arms and the two legs. The sixth wrong guess completes the figure and ends the game. A wrong-guess counter on the board shows how many you have left, and repeating a letter you already tried does not cost you a guess.

What are good starting letters?

Start with common vowels and frequent consonants. The vowels E, A, O, I and U appear in almost every word, and among consonants T, N, R, S, L and D are the most common in English. Opening with a couple of vowels usually reveals the shape of the word, then fill in with high-frequency consonants before you risk rarer letters like Q, Z, X or J.

Can I pick a category?

Yes. Choose from Animals, Countries, Food, Sports, Science or Everyday objects, and each new round draws a random word from that category. There is also a Random / All option that pulls a word from any category. The current category is always shown above the word as a hint, so you know what kind of word you are guessing.

Is this free, and does it work on mobile?

Completely free with no download and no sign-up. The game runs entirely in your browser and is fully responsive: the on-screen keyboard is finger-friendly on phones and tablets, and on a desktop you can also type letters on your physical keyboard. Nothing about your game is sent to a server — only your theme choice and win streak are stored locally.
