Frequently Asked Questions

Which satellites can I track?
The tracker follows a curated set of well-known satellites: the International Space Station, China's Tiangong station, the Hubble Space Telescope, Earth-observation satellites (Terra, Aqua, Landsat 9) and weather satellites (NOAA-19 and GOES-16). Select any one to highlight it and see its ground track. To follow the ISS on its own, use the dedicated ISS tracker.
How are the satellite positions calculated?
Each satellite's orbit is described by a two-line element set (TLE) from CelesTrak. Your browser downloads the TLEs once, then computes each satellite's live position with the standard SGP4 model using the open-source satellite.js library, which runs entirely on your device. After the first load there are no further network requests — the positions update locally every few seconds.
Is it free and do I need an API key?
Yes — the satellite tracker is completely free and needs no API key or sign-up. CelesTrak provides the orbital data openly. There is no account, no paid tier and no advertising anywhere on the page.
How accurate is the tracking?
Positions are computed with SGP4, the same model used across the industry, from recent TLE data. Accuracy is typically within a few kilometres for low-Earth-orbit satellites and is best in the days just after each TLE is issued. It is ideal for seeing where a satellite is now and when it might pass over you, but is not intended for precise pointing or scientific use.
What is a ground track?
The ground track is the path on Earth's surface directly beneath a satellite as it orbits. The curved line on the map shows where the selected satellite has just been and where it is heading over roughly the next orbit — the S-shape comes from the satellite's inclined orbit combined with Earth turning underneath it.
