What a White Screen Is For
A plain, full-brightness white field is surprisingly useful. Because there's nothing else on screen, it doubles as a light source and as a test pattern.
Find dust and dead pixels
Against solid white, trapped dust looks like dark specks and a dead pixel shows as a tiny black dot that never lights up. It's the quickest first check on a new or used monitor, and pairs with the black screen for bright and stuck pixels.
