What a Black Screen Is For

A plain, full-screen black field is more useful than it looks. Because nothing else is lit, it doubles as a way to dim or blackout a display and as a test pattern that makes any stray light stand out.

Spot bright & stuck pixels

Against solid black, a stuck pixel glows as a bright red, green or blue dot and a hot pixel shows as a white speck that never turns off. It's the mirror image of the white screen, which reveals dead (black) pixels — run both for a full dead pixel test. If a colored dot turns up, the stuck pixel fixer can sometimes cycle it back to life.

Check backlight bleed & true blacks

In a dark room an LCD or IPS panel shows faint glowing patches (backlight bleed or IPS glow), usually around the edges, while an OLED stays perfectly dark. Does a black screen save battery or protect an OLED?
