How to Use the Crossword Solver

Enter the answer's shape into the Pattern box: type the letters you're sure of and an underscore (_) for every square you still need. For a nine-letter answer that starts with C, has an O in the third square and ends in D, you'd type c_o___o_d. Click Solve and every dictionary word that matches the length and your known letters appears below, common words first. Add letters to the Also contains box to narrow a long list.

How It Works

The solver turns your pattern into a search over a large English word list: it keeps only words of the exact same length, checks that every letter you supplied lines up in the right position, and — if you used the "also contains" box — that the remaining letters appear somewhere in the word. Matches are ranked so the everyday words you're most likely to want come first. It all happens on your device, so results are instant and your puzzle never leaves the browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I type for the blank squares?

Use an underscore _ for each empty square. A question mark, dot, or space works too — anything that isn't a letter is treated as a blank. The number of squares (letters plus blanks) sets the answer length.

Does it solve a whole crossword from the clues?

No — the crossword solver is a pattern finder for one answer at a time, not a whole-grid solver. It doesn't read clues or fill an entire grid; it finds the words that fit the letters and length you already have. That's usually exactly what you need to break a stubborn clue.

Why are some obscure words missing (or included)?

Results come from a standard English word list of common and playable words. Very rare or proper-noun answers may not appear, and a few uncommon valid words may show up. Common words are listed first to keep the useful ones at the top.

Is anything uploaded?

No — nothing you type is uploaded. The pattern and the word list are processed entirely in your browser, so nothing is sent to a server. Closing the tab clears everything.
