How the Vocal Range Test works

This vocal range test listens through your microphone and finds the pitch you sing, on your device. Press Start microphone, sing a comfortable low note and hold it steadily, then reach for your highest clear note — the tool keeps the lowest and highest pitches it hears and draws them as a bar on the chart. Your range is shown in octaves and semitones, and the centre of that range is matched against the six standard voice types to estimate whether you sing as a bass, baritone, tenor, alto, mezzo-soprano or soprano. How is my voice type decided?

The tool compares the centre of your singing range with the typical ranges of the six standard voice types — bass, baritone, tenor, alto, mezzo-soprano and soprano — and highlights the closest match. It is a useful guide, but a real voice type also depends on your tessitura (where singing feels easiest) and your tone, so treat the result as an estimate rather than a verdict. The chart also gives your range in octaves and semitones, which is often the more useful number.

What is a typical vocal range?

Most untrained singers have a comfortable range of about 1.5 to 2 octaves, and many trained singers reach 2.5 to 3 octaves or more. Range is measured from your lowest clear note to your highest, so a singer who reaches from C3 to C5 has a two-octave range. Warming up first, and singing in full voice rather than straining, usually widens the range you can measure.

Is my microphone audio recorded or uploaded?

No — all pitch detection happens in your browser with the Web Audio API. The microphone stream is analysed live on your device and is never uploaded, saved or recorded. When you press Stop, or close the tab, the microphone is released, and after the page loads the test also works offline.
