How the Ukulele Tuner works

This online ukulele tuner works two ways. Press Start microphone, pluck a string, and it detects the pitch on your device, showing the nearest note in big type with a needle that swings toward sharp or flat; centre the needle and the note turns green when you are within a few cents. Prefer to tune by ear? Tap any string button to play a clean reference tone and match it — no microphone required. Choose Standard gCEA, Low G, Baritone or the older D-tuning and the four target strings update for both methods. Everything runs client-side with the Web Audio API, so nothing is installed and, importantly, your microphone audio is never uploaded or recorded. Playing a guitar too? Open string frequencies

Standard ukulele tuning is re-entrant: the 4th string is tuned HIGHER than the 3rd, so the strings do not run low-to-high across the neck. All frequencies are equal temperament referenced to A4 = 440 Hz.

Because the g string (392.00 Hz) sits above the C string (261.63 Hz), a ukulele has no true bass string — this is what gives it its bright, chiming sound, and it is why beginners often think the 4th string is tuned an octave wrong.

Why does my g string read higher than the C string?

A g string reading higher than the C string is correct, and it is the defining feature of standard ukulele tuning. Standard gCEA is re-entrant, meaning the 4th string is tuned up to G4 at 392.00 Hz rather than down below the C string at 261.63 Hz. The strings therefore do not run low to high across the neck, and the ukulele has no true bass string. This is what produces its bright, chiming sound. If you would rather the strings ran in pitch order, select the Low G tuning, which drops that string to G3 at 196.00 Hz.

How do I tune my ukulele with the microphone?

What is standard ukulele tuning?

Standard tuning for soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles is gCEA — the strings are G4, C4, E4 and A4. It is re-entrant, meaning the top G string is tuned high rather than being the lowest note. A baritone ukulele is tuned DGBE (D3, G3, B3, E4), the same as the top four strings of a guitar. This tuner includes gCEA, Low G, Baritone and an older D-tuning.

Can I tune my ukulele without a microphone?

Yes — you can tune a ukulele by ear. Tap any string button to hear that exact pitch — for example the A string at 440 Hz — and match your string to the tone by ear. This needs no microphone and no permission, so it works on any device, and it is handy in noisy rooms where microphone detection struggles.

Is my microphone audio uploaded or recorded?

No — the ukulele tuner analyses the microphone stream live on your device with the Web Audio API and never uploads, saves or records it. All pitch detection happens inside the page, so no audio and no tuning data leaves your browser. Pressing Stop, or closing the tab, releases the microphone at once.
