When April 15 falls on a Saturday, a Sunday or a legal holiday, the US federal income tax filing deadline moves to the next business day. Emancipation Day in the District of Columbia, on April 16, also pushes the deadline, so Tax Day sometimes lands on April 17 or April 18. Taxpayers can request an automatic six-month extension to file, but any tax owed is still due on the April deadline. The April 15 date has been in place since the Internal Revenue Code of 1954.
