365, 366, and the leap-year rule

Earth takes about 365.2422 days to orbit the Sun. Since a calendar can't have a fraction of a day, the Gregorian calendar uses 365 days in a normal ("common") year and adds a 366th day — February 29 — in leap years to catch up the accumulated quarter-days.

A year is a leap year if it's divisible by 4, except century years, which must also be divisible by 400. So 2024 and 2000 are leap years (366 days), while 1900 and 2100 are common years (365 days). You can check any year with the leap year checker.

How many days are in a year on average?
Averaged over the 400-year Gregorian cycle, a year is 365.2425 days — very close to the true solar year of 365.2422 days, so the calendar drifts only about a day every 3,000 years. That figure comes from fitting 97 leap years into every 400: 365 + 97/400 = 365.2425. The older Julian calendar used a flat 365.25 days, an overshoot of about 11 minutes a year that had pushed the date 10 days out of step by 1582. The Gregorian fix was to drop three leap days per 400 years, which is why 1700, 1800 and 1900 were common years while 2000 was a leap year.
