A common year has 365 days; a leap year has 366. Here's the rule behind it, plus how a year breaks down into weeks, months, hours and seconds.
Earth takes about 365.2422 days to orbit the Sun. Since a calendar can't have a fraction of a day, the Gregorian calendar uses 365 days in a normal ("common") year and adds a 366th day — February 29 — in leap years to catch up the accumulated quarter-days.
A year is a leap year if it's divisible by 4, except century years, which must also be divisible by 400. So 2024 and 2000 are leap years (366 days), while 1900 and 2100 are common years (365 days). You can check any year with the leap year checker.
