The big number is the count of whole days from today until Easter. The live timer beneath it ticks down the remaining hours, minutes and seconds in your local time zone, so it stays accurate wherever you are.

How the date is worked out

Easter is the most movable of the major holidays: the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the March equinox, which can be anywhere from March 22 to April 25. The countdown uses the standard Gregorian computus to find it.

Does the countdown reset after Easter?
The Easter countdown resets automatically. As soon as Easter has passed, the timer switches to next year's date, so the figure on screen is always the time until the next Easter. Why does the date of Easter change every year?
Easter is a moveable feast tied to the lunar cycle rather than to a fixed calendar date. The rule settled at the Council of Nicaea in 325 places it on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March, so Western Easter falls between 22 March and 25 April. The calculation, known as the computus, uses an ecclesiastical approximation of the full moon rather than the astronomical one. Orthodox churches apply the same rule to the Julian calendar, which is why Orthodox Easter usually lands on a different Sunday.
