Steps per mile

A stride-based estimate for healthy adults — actual steps vary with terrain, stride and stamina. Not medical advice.

Turn your steps into miles and kilometres from your height and pace — or go the other way and find the steps for a distance. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

How steps are turned into miles

The calculator works from your stride length, which scales with your height. A walking stride is about 0.413 of your height, jogging roughly 0.45 and running about 0.50, because a faster gait reaches further with each step. Since a mile is 63,360 inches, your steps per mile is simply 63,360 divided by your stride in inches. Divide your step count by that figure and you have the distance in miles, which the tool also shows in kilometres.

Steps to distance, or distance to steps

Switch modes with the tabs at the top. In Steps to distance you enter a step count and get the miles and kilometres it covers — handy for reading a pedometer or phone. In Distance to steps you enter a distance in miles or kilometres and get the number of steps it takes, useful for planning a walk to hit a daily target. Both use the same height and pace, so the steps-per-mile figure stays consistent between them.

Getting an accurate number

Entering your real height matters far more than any generic average — a tall and a short person can log very different step counts on the same route. If you want to be precise, measure your own stride by walking a known distance and counting steps, then compare it with the figure here. Pair this with the Calories Burned Calculator to see the energy your walk uses and the Weight Loss Timeline to fit it into a plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many steps are in a mile?
For most people a mile is roughly 2,000 to 2,500 steps, but the exact figure depends on your height and pace. Taller people cover more ground with each step, so they take fewer steps per mile, while shorter people take more. Faster movement lengthens your stride too, so you cover a mile in fewer running steps than walking steps. This calculator works out the number for you from the height and pace you enter rather than using one fixed average.
How do you convert steps to miles?
To convert steps to miles you first work out your stride length, then divide the total distance by it. A mile is 63,360 inches, so the steps per mile is 63,360 divided by your stride in inches. Dividing your step count by that steps-per-mile figure gives the miles you have covered. This tool does the arithmetic instantly and also shows the result in kilometres, so you do not have to do any of it by hand.
How does height affect steps per mile?
Height is the biggest single factor in steps per mile because your stride length scales with it. A walking stride is roughly 0.413 of your height, so a taller person naturally covers more distance per step and needs fewer steps to reach a mile. That is why two people walking the same route can log very different step counts. Entering your real height gives a far more accurate distance than assuming a generic 2,000 steps per mile.
How many miles is 10,000 steps?
For an average-height adult walking, 10,000 steps works out to roughly 4 to 5 miles, or about 7 to 8 kilometres. The precise distance depends on your height and how briskly you move, so a shorter person will cover a little less and a taller person a little more for the same step count. Enter your own height and pace above to see exactly how far 10,000 steps takes you.
Do running and walking cover a mile in different steps?
Yes, running covers a mile in fewer steps than walking because a running stride is longer. Where a walking stride is around 0.413 of your height, jogging and running stretch it closer to 0.45 and 0.50, so each step travels further and the steps per mile drop. That is why the calculator lets you pick walking, jogging or running: the same distance maps to a different number of steps depending on how fast you are moving.
