Veterans Day is fixed on November 11 because the armistice that ended the fighting of the First World War took effect at 11am on 11 November 1918. It was called Armistice Day in the United States until 1954, when Congress renamed it to honour veterans of all wars. It briefly moved to the fourth Monday in October under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act before being returned to November 11 in 1978. When the date falls on a Saturday federal employees observe it on the Friday, and when it falls on a Sunday, on the Monday.
