Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3 in Galveston, Texas, announcing that enslaved people in the state were free — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect. The name is a blend of June and nineteenth. It became the eleventh US federal holiday when the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act was signed on June 17, 2021. Texas was the first state to make it a holiday, in 1980.
