Play Crazy Eights Online vs the Computer
Play Crazy Eights — the classic shedding card game — directly against the computer, free, in your browser, with no download and no sign-up. Deal is 2 to 4 players; you play the face-up hand at the bottom. On your turn you play a card that matches the top of the discard pile by suit or rank, or an 8, which is wild and lets you name any suit. If you cannot play, you draw a card. How the computer plays
Crazy Eights is a shedding game, and shedding games are driven as much by the luck of the deal as by skill — on roughly half your turns you will have only one card you are even allowed to play. Where there is a real choice, the computer opponent runs a fast heuristic entirely in your browser: it keeps its wild cards in reserve for when it gets stuck, plays to keep a suit it can follow, and unloads its attacking cards (the draw-two and skip cards) on you when you are down to your last couple of cards. Beginner plays a loose, random-legal game and often wastes its wilds; Medium and Hard play the sharp lines. It is a solid, fair opponent that tilts the odds in its favour — not an unbeatable one, and in a game this luck-driven nobody could be. Everything runs client-side in a background worker thread; nothing is sent to a server.
How to play Crazy Eights — the rules
- The deal. Each player gets seven cards. The rest form the draw pile, and one card is turned up to start the discard pile.
- Your turn. Play a card matching the top card of the discard pile by suit or by rank.
- Eights are wild. An 8 can be played on anything; when you do, you name the suit the next player must follow.
- Drawing. If you have no legal card, draw one from the pile. If the drawn card can be played you may play it, otherwise your turn passes.
- Winning. The first player to shed all their cards wins the round. You must go out on an ordinary card — you cannot win by playing an 8 as your last card.
Tips
- Hold your eights. A wild 8 is your escape hatch when you are stuck — don’t spend it while you still have ordinary cards you can play.
- Steer to your longest suit. When you match by rank you change the suit in play — swing it toward the suit you hold the most of so you can keep playing.
- Watch the counts. When an opponent is down to a card or two, dump the suits they’re unlikely to hold to force a draw.
