The World Clock Time-Zone Landscape
Time zones look like a tidy grid of whole hours. They aren't. We read the standard UTC offset of all 162 cities, countries and regions on our World Clock straight from the IANA database — and the real shape is lumpy, with quarter-hour outliers and a near-even split over whether clocks move at all.
How the World's Clocks Cluster
Each bar is one standard UTC offset; its height is how many of the 162 places sit there. Two things stand out: the clocks pile up in the Americas and Europe (UTC−5 and UTC+1 alone hold 46 places), and five offsets — shown in amber — aren't whole hours at all.

The Clocks That Don't Sit on the Hour
Most of the world rounds to a whole hour from UTC. A handful don't — and one, Nepal, is offset by three-quarters of an hour, so its clocks read 5:45 ahead. These are the 11 places on our board that break the grid:

Half-hour and quarter-hour offsets are a reminder that a time zone is a political decision, not an astronomical one — which is exactly why our time-zone converter reads the IANA database rather than dividing longitude by 15.
Nearly Half Never Change Their Clocks
Daylight saving feels universal if you live in North America or Europe, but it isn't. Of the 162 places we track, 87 (54%) shift their clocks and 75 (46%) never do. The whole of East Asia, the Gulf, most of Africa, India and much of South America keep one fixed offset year-round — Tokyo, Singapore, Dubai, Nairobi and New Delhi never spring forward. That fixed-vs-shifting split is the reason a time gap you memorised can quietly be wrong for a few weeks each year, which we measured pair by pair in When Time-Zone Gaps Change.

Where the Clocks Crowd Together
Offsets aren't evenly populated. Four of them carry nearly half our board between them — the dense population belts of the eastern US and western Europe:

Of the 162 places on the LK Forge World Clock, 11 sit off the whole hour: India and five other Indian cities at UTC+5:30, Iran (Tehran) at +3:30, Afghanistan (Kabul) at +4:30, Adelaide and Darwin at +9:30, and Nepal (Kathmandu) at +5:45.
How many major cities observe daylight saving time?
87 of the 162 places we track (54%) shift their clocks for daylight saving; the other 75 never change. Most of East Asia, the Gulf and the tropics keep a fixed offset all year — Tokyo, Singapore, Dubai and Nairobi among them.
Which country has a 45-minute time offset?
Nepal. Kathmandu runs at UTC+5:45 — the only :45 offset among the places on our board, and one of very few anywhere (the Chatham Islands, at +12:45, are another).
What is the widest time difference on a world clock?
Across the places we track it is 22 hours, from Honolulu at UTC−10 to New Zealand and Fiji at UTC+12. Globally the extremes run 26 hours, from UTC−12 to UTC+14.
