The weather app on your phone compresses a rich forecast into one icon and one temperature. Most of the time that is fine. When a decision depends on the weather, it throws away exactly the information you need. Here is what a proper forecast surface shows instead — and why none of it needs an account or an install.

A weather glyph is a compression of the forecast down to a single picture, and like any compression it discards detail. Two days that both read “cloudy” can differ by ten degrees of feels-like and forty points of rain chance. The default app made a reasonable editorial call about what to show most people most of the time. A forecast tool makes a different one: show the values, and let you judge.

Every default app shows a 7- or 10-day strip with equal confidence across all of it. That is the lie of omission. Forecast skill falls off with lead time, and day 7 is a very different claim from tomorrow. Feels-like temperature is not the only thing a default buries. UV index drives sunburn risk and is genuinely instantaneous — a night reading should be zero, not the day's peak. Sunrise, sunset and golden-hour times matter to anyone planning outdoors. We give each its own tool rather than a footnote.

None of these is a premium feature or a paid tier. They are the ordinary contents of a forecast, shown rather than summarised.

Where the Data Comes From, Said Plainly

We do not run a weather model, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The forecast comes from Open-Meteo, a free open API that blends national weather services and the major global forecast models. When you choose a location, your browser asks Open-Meteo for the current conditions and the 7-day outlook and displays them. That request carries your location to the data provider to answer the query; it does not come to us, and there is no account tying it to you.

This matters for reading the result honestly. The big consumer apps ultimately draw on the same national services and global models; the forecast you get here is in the same family. What a tool adds is not secret data — it is the interface decision about how much of that data to hand back to you.

Mistakes Worth Skipping

Reading the icon instead of the values

The weather glyph is a lossy compression of the actual forecast. Two days that both show "cloudy" can differ by ten degrees of feels-like and forty points of rain probability. If a decision depends on the weather, read the numbers the icon was made from, not the icon.

Treating a 7-day strip as seven equal forecasts

Tomorrow's forecast and next Tuesday's are not the same kind of statement. Forecast skill degrades with lead time; the far end of the strip is a best estimate, not a promise. Any tool that presents all seven days with identical visual confidence is hiding that from you.

Confusing chance of rain with amount of rain

A 90% chance of 0.2mm is a damp nuisance; a 40% chance of 20mm is worth cancelling plans for. The default raindrop icon shows neither clearly. Probability and expected amount are two separate readings and both matter.

Reading UV or feels-like off a daily maximum at night

A daily-max UV figure holds the day's peak value all evening, so a tool that shows "UV 7" at 10pm is showing you a number that was true at noon. Instantaneous quantities — UV, feels-like, current temperature — should read from the current conditions, not the day's high. Ours do.

Installing an app for something a web page does

A forecast is a read-only lookup. It does not need push notifications, a login, or an install to show you tomorrow's weather — those exist to retain you, not to inform you. A tool that opens in a browser tab and asks for nothing is doing the same job with less attached.

If you only take one thing from the list: learn to read the forecast rather than the icon. It is a fifteen-minute skill that outlasts any app.

The practical takeaway is to weight the near days heavily and treat the far end of any 7- or 10-day strip as a direction of travel, not a commitment.

Why do two weather apps show different forecasts for the same place?

Because they blend different models with different weightings, and they round and present the result differently. The underlying physics is shared, but the last step — which model to trust, how to summarise it into one icon and one number — is an editorial choice each app makes. This is exactly why seeing the raw values (probability, feels-like, wind) is more useful than seeing one app's summary glyph: you can judge the forecast rather than the interface.
