Frequently Asked Questions

How does the plant identifier work, and how accurate is it?
The Plant & Tree Identifier matches your photo against the Pl@ntNet species database and returns the most likely species ranked by a confidence score. A clear, close-up photo of a single leaf, flower, fruit or bark gives the best match, and reviewing the top few ranked results is the reliable way to read the answer. Photograph one feature at a time rather than a whole plant, because the match is made on leaf shape, vein pattern and bark texture. Treat every result as a ranked probability, and never as confirmation that a plant or mushroom is safe to eat.
How does the grass seed calculator work out how much seed I need?
The Grass Seed Calculator multiplies your lawn size by the recommended seeding rate for your grass type, and whether you're seeding a new lawn or overseeding, to give the total pounds of seed. Rates are typical U.S. cooperative-extension figures expressed in pounds per 1,000 square feet, so any lawn size scales from the same number. A new lawn uses roughly double the overseeding rate, because you are building cover on bare soil rather than thickening turf that is already there. The math runs fully in your browser.
Can I check whether a houseplant is safe for pets?
The Plant Care Guide lists light, water and pet-safety details for popular houseplants, and marks each one as pet-safe or toxic so you can check before bringing a plant home. Pet-safety follows the widely-cited ASPCA toxicity listings. Search or filter by name, light level or watering need to compare plants side by side. If you think a pet has already eaten part of a plant, contact a vet rather than relying on the listing.
Is it free, and does my photo get uploaded?
Every nature tool here is free, with no sign-up and no API key. The identifier sends your photo to Pl@ntNet to return a match, and nothing about the photo is stored afterwards. The grass seed calculator and plant care guide run entirely in your browser and upload nothing at all. No account is created, so closing the tab leaves nothing behind.
