Metric vs Imperial: What's the Difference?

Nearly every measurement you meet comes from one of two families. The metric system (formally the SI, Système International) counts in tens: milli, centi, kilo. The imperial system — and its close American cousin, US customary units — inherited its units from centuries of English trade: inches, feet, pounds, gallons. This guide covers how each one works, who uses which, and the few conversion factors that are actually worth knowing by heart.
How the metric system works
The metric system was created in France in the 1790s with one deliberate design rule: every unit scales by powers of ten. There is one base unit per quantity — the meter for length, the kilogram for mass, the liter for everyday volume — and prefixes do the rest. A kilometer is 1,000 meters; a centimeter is 1/100 of a meter; a milliliter is 1/1000 of a liter. Converting between metric units never needs a lookup table — you move the decimal point.
In 1960 the system was formalised as the SI, which modern science and engineering use everywhere — including in the United States. Since 2019, every SI base unit has been defined from constants of nature (the speed of light, the Planck constant), not physical objects, so a meter measured anywhere on Earth is exactly the same meter.
How the imperial system works
Imperial units grew out of practical medieval measures — a foot, a yard, a stone — and were standardised by the British Weights and Measures Act of 1824. Instead of one ratio everywhere, each step has its own: 12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a yard, 1,760 yards in a mile, 16 ounces in a pound, 14 pounds in a stone. Defenders point out the human scale of the units and how divisible 12 is (halves, thirds, quarters); critics point at the arithmetic.
One wrinkle matters in practice: the United States standardised its units before 1824, so US customary units are not quite imperial. Lengths and weights are identical, but volumes split: a US gallon is 3.785 liters, an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.546 liters, and the pints and fluid ounces differ with them. When a recipe or a fuel-economy figure crosses the Atlantic, that 20% gap is real.
Who uses which today
- Metric: almost every country, and all of science, medicine and international trade.
- United States: customary units for daily life (miles, pounds, gallons, °F), metric underneath — since 1959 the inch, yard and pound have been legally defined from metric values, and since 1975 metrication has been official policy but voluntary.
- United Kingdom: a hybrid — metric for packaging, trade and weather, imperial for road distances, speed limits and draught beer.
- Liberia and Myanmar: the two countries usually listed alongside the US as not fully metric; both have been transitioning.
The conversions worth memorising
Since 1959, the core factors have been exact by definition, not approximations:
- 1 inch = 2.54 cm — exactly.
- 1 foot = 0.3048 m and 1 yard = 0.9144 m — exactly.
- 1 mile = 1.609344 km — exactly.
- 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg — exactly.
- °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 — and the two scales meet at −40°.
For quick head math: a meter is a long yard (+10%), a kilogram is 2.2 pounds, a liter is a big US quart (+5%), and 100 km/h is about 62 mph. Why the US never switched
Not for lack of trying. Congress legalised the metric system in 1866, the US signed the Metre Convention in 1875, and the Metric Conversion Act of 1975 declared metric the preferred system — but made conversion voluntary. With no deadline, the cost of relabelling every road sign, tool and recipe outweighed the everyday benefit, and customary units stuck. The compromise America landed on is the one most people never notice: the familiar units survived, but every one of them is now defined by the metric system underneath.
