How to Analyze a Mancala Position
LK Forge · 4 min read · Updated August 2026
You don’t need a separate program to see who’s ahead in a game of Mancala. The free LK Forge Mancala game (standard Kalah rules) has a built-in Analyze button that evaluates any position on the board — it names the best pit to play, highlights it, and shows an evaluation bar for whether you or the computer stands better. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded. This guide covers how to use it and how to read what it tells you.
Analyze any position in three steps
- Open the board. Go to the Mancala game. You can analyze at any point — against the computer or mid-game.
- Reach the position. Sow from the pits you want until the position you’d like to study is on the board.
- Press Analyze. The analyzer searches and fills in the result: the evaluation bar and lead label, the best pit to play (highlighted on the board), and how deep it looked.
Reading the evaluation
The analysis panel shows:
- Evaluation bar & label — from your side. The bar fills toward whoever is ahead and reads Even position, a slight edge, clearly ahead, or winning, for You or the AI.
- Best pit — the strongest pit to sow from this position, highlighted on your row of the board.
- Depth & nodes — how many moves ahead it searched and how many positions it examined, so you can see how hard it looked.
Why the first player often shows “clearly ahead”
Kalah with six pits of four stones is a solved first-player win — with perfect play, whoever moves first can force a winning margin. So if you go first, don’t be surprised when the analyzer marks you as clearly ahead straight from the opening: it is reporting that real advantage, not overrating your position. The way you cash it in is the game’s central skill — chaining free turns. Landing your last stone in your store gives you another move, and stringing several of those together early can bank a big lead before your opponent gets going. Opening with the pit whose last stone lands exactly in your store is the classic first move, and the analyzer will happily show you those chains.
What powers it
The analyzer isn’t a lookup or a chatbot — it’s a real Mancala engine running client-side: a negamax search with alpha-beta pruning that handles the extra-turn rule correctly, so a free turn keeps the search on the same player rather than flipping sides, and reads captures and free-turn chains deep into the game. It’s the same engine the Hard computer opponent uses, so its “best pit” is genuinely the move it would play.
That’s all there is to it — open the Mancala board, reach a position, and press Analyze to see who’s ahead and which pit to sow. For more of the same, the Solvers & Analyzers hub gathers every LK Forge solver and game analyzer in one place.
Open the free Mancala game and press Analyze on any position — best pit, an evaluation bar and search depth.
Open the Mancala AnalyzerFrequently asked questions
- Is the Mancala analyzer free?
- Yes. It is built into the free Mancala (Kalah) game and needs no account, no download and no API key. The analysis engine runs entirely in your own browser, so there is nothing to install and no usage limit.
- What does the evaluation bar mean?
- The bar and label are shown from your point of view. It fills toward whoever is ahead and reads “Even position”, “You/AI a slight edge”, “clearly ahead”, or “winning”. Because Kalah with the standard six-pits-of-four setup is a first-player win with perfect play, if you move first the analyzer will usually show you as clearly ahead right from the opening — that is correct, not a bug.
- Does it understand the free-turn and capture rules?
- Yes. This is standard Kalah: landing your last stone in your own store earns another turn, and landing in one of your own empty pits captures the stones in the pit opposite. The analyzer reads free-turn chains and captures several moves deep, which is exactly where most of the game is won or lost.
- Can I analyze a specific position?
- Yes. Play the moves to reach the position you want to study, then press Analyze. The analyzer always evaluates the position currently on the board, for whoever is to move, and highlights the pit it recommends you sow.
- How strong is it?
- The analyzer uses a real negamax search with alpha-beta pruning that handles Kalah’s extra-turn rule correctly — a free turn keeps the search on the same side instead of flipping to the opponent. It is the same engine as the Hard computer opponent and plays a very strong game, chaining free turns and setting up captures deep into the game.
- Does it work on mobile?
- Yes. The Mancala game and its analyzer are fully responsive and run in any modern mobile browser, so you can analyze positions on a phone or tablet as well as a desktop.
