Some of the most-shared word facts are repeated far more often than they're checked. We ran the popular ones through every word in the 172,835-word ENABLE open list — the same list behind our Word Unscrambler — to see which hold up. Two of the favourites don't.

Myth 1: “Only two words have all five vowels in order”

The claim that abstemious and facetious are the only words whose vowels read a, e, i, o, u in sequence is everywhere. Take the definition literally — the vowels of the word, left to right, are exactly a-e-i-o-u, each once — and ENABLE holds six, not two:

The famous pair are joined by arsenious and abstentious, plus the adverb forms facetiously and abstemiously. Loosen the rule to allow repeated or extra vowels between them and the a-e-i-o-u run appears in 28 ENABLE words — but the strict, one-of-each version is the one the myth is really about, and it's six.

Myth 2: “Typewriter is the longest one-keyboard-row word”

Typewriter really can be typed on the top row alone — but it isn't the longest. Five other ten-letter words tie it, and only the top row gets anywhere near that length. Here's the longest word each row can spell in ENABLE:

You'll sometimes see eleven-letter claims for the top row; none of those words are in the ENABLE list, so within a standard word list ten is the ceiling. The home row tops out at nine (haggadahs), and the bottom row — with no vowels among z, x, c, v, b, n, m — can't manage more than two letters.

Words with no vowel at all

Drop a, e, i, o and u entirely and ENABLE still has 121 words — the longest at seven letters, carried by y standing in for a vowel:

Bar y as well and just 20 survive — the interjections and oddities like tsktsks, crwth (a Welsh string instrument) and cwm (a mountain hollow).

Q doesn't always need U

“Q is always followed by U” is a good rule of thumb and a bad absolute. ENABLE holds 22 words with a Q and no U — mostly loanwords and currency names:

Words that pack a, e, i, o and u in once each — in any order — are less rare than they feel: 717 of them. The shortest run seven letters:

The six-letter eunoia often cited as the shortest isn't in the ENABLE list, so seven is the floor here. Every count on this page is scoped to that one list — change the dictionary and the numbers move, which is exactly why it's worth naming the list.
